A metro Atlanta non-profit has received a $1 million grant to expand its services for a community where half the residents are Latino, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

According to the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Ser Familia will use the money to provide families with access to physicians, food security, child care, and more.

"With the amount of peopleand so many of them being uninsuredit's going to take both of us and more to really make a dent," Belisa Urbina, Ser Familia's CEO, tells the Journal-Constitution.

The community of 9,000 in Cobb County has a median income of $53,106, which is significantly lower than the county's average of $86,013.

"Unemployment in that community is very low, it's just that the families earn so little that it's difficult for them to get ahead," Urbina tells the Journal-Constitution.

Ser Familia plans to use the grant to start an after-school program at Fair Oaks Elementary.

Currently, students who want to take part in such a program have to go to another school.
